I’m Emma Karran, an acupuncturist and naturopath offering gentle, effective treatments at The Henry St Clinic, in the West Clare market town of Kilrush.
I’ve spent much of my life exploring what it means to care: for our bodies, our inner lives, and the world around us. Earlier in life, I spent twelve years in a Christian monastic community as a nun, where I was formed by practices of silence, community, and compassionate service. That experience still shapes how I work — with presence, respect, and a deep belief in the value of each person’s story.
Although originally from the UK, I've lived on the west coast of Clare for ten years and I find the quiet, beauty and closeness to the ocean helps keep my mind clear and my heart open to the needs of others around me and the wider non-human world. Being here has stilled and focussed my mind and made me into an environmental and human rights activist too. It has also given me opportunities to learn about how applying the ancient practice of Socratic questioning can lead to greater mental health, better relationships and more ethical living.
I am also a composer, singer / song writer and music teacher – as well as performer in local dramatic productions – and value deeply the power of creative expression in healing and growth.
Acupuncture is based on Chinese medicine principles that have been developed in the east for over 2500 years.
These principles aim to restore, promote and maintain good health and are increasingly used in mainstream healthcare as their therapeutic value for a growing number of conditions is recognised.
Its relaxing effect on the mind as well as the body makes acupuncture ideal for managing stress and anxiety.
Acupuncture is also able to keep up with modern medicine as it is continually adapting to take on board scientific advancements in the understanding of the human body.
Acupuncture can treat a wide range of physical, emotional and mental health issues by inserting fine needles to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms.
I often use cupping and gua sha in my treatments: two ancient Chinese Medicine techniques which are hugely effective for deep muscle pain relief.
In recent decades, acupuncture has been increasingly embraced in Western medicine as a potential treatment for a number of common, often difficult to treat, conditions: especially those involving pain and inflammation.
Whether you're coming with acute or chronic pain, a long standing health condition which is getting in the way of living a full life, hormonal, sleep or digestive problems, stress, fatigue or fertility issues, acupuncture can help.
I offer a calm, respectful space where you can pause, breathe, and receive support for whatever you're carrying: whether it’s physical discomfort, emotional strain, stress, or simply the need to reconnect with yourself.
I also offer facial acupuncture. Facial acupuncture supports circulation, skin tone, and vitality while addressing the underlying imbalances that show on the face. These treatments also encourage deep relaxation.
